As you look at the Canyonlands Rodeo, you see our heritage, traditions, family values and so much more! Rodeo has been established in the Canyonlands area for over 50 years. The Rodeo Committee is made up of dedicated local volunteers, who are interested in seeing the sport and tradition of rodeo preserved.  With out the countless hours the committee puts in as well as the support of Grand County and our many sponsors we could not do it. We are proud to be able to provide such great family entertainment to not only the tourists but our local families and community.

We are grateful to have Bar T Rodeo Inc. as our Stock Contractor

The Bar-T Rodeo Inc. is a family owned and operated business founded over 60 years ago in Moab, Utah.  D. A. Swanny Kerby - inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame in 1997, and his wife, Verda Kerby rounded up wild mustangs and range bulls starting around 1945. The Kerby's brought early rodeo to Utah and has furnished quality livestock in every "Superbowl of Rodeo's," the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in every year since 1959. “Fifty years is a long time, but a man in rodeo really needs two lifetimes – one to get an outfit together and a second one to enjoy it.” ~D.A. Swanny Kerby~
Swanny & Verda's son, Bud Kerby and his wife, Evelyn, purchased the Bar-T Rodeo Company from his parents and made the it one of the top rodeo livestock companies in the United States. Bud grew up as a rodeo man. From an early age he took care of the livestock and sharing the love of the animals. Bud competed in the sport as a saddle bronc rider and worked as a pick-up man for many years. Bud was one of the best during his years as a pick-up man. Behind the scenes, Bud and his wife Evelyn took care of the business for 30 plus years. Bud decided to start raising the company’s bucking horses. He purchased a roan stud C4 Roany and put him with some of the best mares the company owned. From 1983 forward, Bud took many Bar-T raised bucking horses to the NFR. Bud and his Dad Swanny were buddies. Best friends, they worked side-by-side building up the Bar-T Rodeo Company. Today, the company now known as the Bar T Rodeo Inc. owns over 200 head of horses all raised on the ranch out of the lineage of Roany. Bud Kerby passed away in October of 2010 and will be inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame this year in July, 2013. "You are only as good as your word," "It used to be, a man's word was important in the old days." ~Bud Kerby 2005~
Today the Bar T Rodeo Inc. is owned by third generation family members, Jeff and Wendie Flitton, along with their son, Cody Flitton, a fourth generation family member.  Many family members participate in the growth and maintenance of the Bar-T Rodeo Inco, including Bud's wife, Evelyn Kerby, Sam and Kellie Addington, Lori and Martin Pierce all of whom love their family heritage and the sport of rodeo.
Bar-T helps put on over 46 performances a year. They lease stock to many of the large rodeo’s such as the Denver stock show, San Antonio, Houston, Laughlin, Nampa, and Ogden to name a few. Bar T rodeo stock animals were at the first Olympic Rodeo held in 2002. To this day, the Bar-T take their high quality livestock to the NFR in Las Vegas and they are one of the top 10 stock contractors in the world.

We are proud to have Jody Carper as our Rodeo Announcer

Picture
Jody Carper is a rodeo announcer with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA).  Originally from a small town in West Texas, Jody grew through the rodeo ranks competing in tie down roping, team roping, and steer wrestling.  He became a professional tie down roper in the PRCA in 1998.  He has competed in numerous rodeos across the country, and was a PRCA California Circuit Finalist in 2003.
While competing in the rodeo arena, Jody also began working part-time as an announcer in 1991.  Though he loved to rope, Jody found a whole new fulfillment through announcing.  In 2005, he decided to focus all of his rodeo efforts toward his announcing career and hit the big time in 2008 announcing major rodeos including the Wrangler Tour Rodeo in St. Paul, Oregon and the National Finals Steer Roping.  In 2010, Jody worked the Dodge National Circuit Finals in Pocatello, Idaho and has been selected to work the DNCFR again in 2011.  Drawing on his past experiences as a contestant allows him to give fans a unique and entertaining behind-the-scenes view of the sport of rodeo.

When he’s not announcing rodeos, you can find him running up and down a basketball court.  Since 1993, Jody has worked as a college basketball official.  He has worked in 11 different conferences and one professional league across the United States.  In 2005, Jody was selected to work the McDonald’s High School All-American game on ESPN.  The time he has spent on the court, has also led to other opportunities behind the microphone such as calling both basketball and football games.

New to our rodeo this year - Justin Rumford, Rodeo Clown!

Winner - 2012 PRCA Clown of the Year!

Picture
Justin Rumford is a third-generation rodeo cowboy. His grandfather, Floyd Rumford, started Rumford Rodeo Company in the 1950s and ran the company until his death in 1998.  Justin’s father, Bronc Rumford, took it over and still raises rodeo stock in the small town of Abbyville, Kansas.
Justin grew up in the rodeo business and has worked as a contestant and pickup man in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association since 1999. He qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo, in steer wrestling and saddle bronc riding, two of his four years of college. In 2010, his rodeo career took a different direction when he was asked by a friend to fill-in as the barrelman for a rodeo in Kansas.  One month later, he received his PRCA card to be a rodeo entertainer, and has not slowed down since!
In the short time that Justin has been a barrelman, he has already worked some of the best rodeos and with the best announcers and stock contractors in the business.  The year 2012 is going to be a break-out year, as Justin has been selected to work several of the top PRCA rodeos, as well as the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, WY, and the PRCA Tour Finale in Omaha, NE.
Justin has been blessed with a family history and a bright future in the sport he loves, “the greatest show on dirt,” RODEO!! He looks forward to coming to a rodeo near you!
