Mutton Bustin'
Children 7 to 10 years old / under 65 lbs may participate in this event at the Moab Canyonlands PRCA Rodeo.
Mutton Bustin' is an event similar to bull riding or bronc riding, in which children ride or race sheep. In the event, a sheep is held still, either in a small chute or by an adult handler while a child is placed on top in a riding position. Once the child is seated atop the sheep, the sheep is released and usually starts to run in an attempt to get the child off. Often small prizes or ribbons are given out to the children who can stay on the longest. There are no set rules for mutton busting, no national organization, and most events are organized at the local level. Children 7 to 10 years old / under 65 lbs may participate in this event at the Moab Canyonlands PRCA Rodeo.
Stick Pony Race
There are two age groups for this at the Moab Canyonlands PRCA Rodeo:
Group One - Children 3 to 4 years old, and Group Two - Children 5 to 6 years old.
Stick horses or ponies are used for this fun race for children. An obstacle course can be set up using poles, straw bales, sawhorses or even barrels used in barrel racing. Children attempt to ride their stick ponies through the course. Depending on how the event is set up, children may either run through the course one at a time or they will run through as a group. Either the fastest one or the first one to cross the finish line is the winner. If you don't have stick horses, brooms will work just fine for this.
